Palm Beach Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. Anita Mandal uses Kybella® to re-contour the jaw and neckline. A form of non-surgical “liposuction”, Kybella® can permanently dissolve fat. As a Master Injector, Dr. Mandal commonly uses Kybella® for the treatment of double chin, or submental fat, as well as for fatty jowls to re-sculpt the jawline.
An oval face shape is considered youthful for females, whereas a square jawline is considered attractive for males. In both men and women, a distinct mandibular border with no jowl overhang is a sign of a youthful neck. As jowl fat descends with age, along with fat under the chin, these changes contribute to squaring of the lower face and loss of jawline definition. Jowl as well as neck contouring is a key component of lower face and neck rejuvenation. Traditionally, liposuction has been the most common method for jowl and neck fat re-contouring (used in 81% of cases based on a 2008 survey of dermatologists and plastic surgeons), but it can result in loose skin. Kybella® is a minimal-invasive, non-surgical injectable treatment performed in less than 30 minutes to permanently destroy fat. Unlike liposuction, Kybella® can reduce jowl and neck fat without leaving loose skin.
Dr. Mandal strives to deliver the best Kybella results in West Palm Beach and always practices patient safety. This page is dedicated to educating our patients on Kybella. If you’d like to book a consultation or have questions, please reach out today.
What are the Misconceptions about Kybella?
In Dr. Mandal’s expert hands, Kybella® can give a surgical-like outcome and, in some cases, is even superior to surgery because of the overlying skin retraction that follows. The key to a successful outcome from Kybella® is the proper dosing and correct number of treatments. The majority of patients should be prepared to have multiple vials per treatment and more than 1 treatment for satisfying results.
Unlike many other offices where Kybella® may give mixed results, Dr. Mandal has a high level of patient satisfaction in her practice with Kybella® treatments due to offering a unique combination of injector skill, an effective dosing regimen as well as proper diagnosis and judgment.
How Does Kybella Work?
Kybella® can be an ideal option for patients not wanting the downtime and recovery associated with surgical liposuction. Kybella® works by inciting an inflammatory response within the treated fat, causing fat cells to be permanently killed. These dead fat cells are then gradually absorbed by your body.
Kybella® is similar to a natural substance in your body called deoxycholic acid occurring in stomach acid. In your body, deoxycholic acid helps break down fat during digestion. Kybella®, which contains the synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, also dissolves fat.
How many treatment sessions you need depends on the amount of submental fat you have. Patients can typically be divided into mild, moderate, and severe.
What Areas are Treated with Kybella?
- Submental fat under the chin, also known as a double chin
- Fatty jowls (for jawline sculpting)
Mild submental fullness:
- 1 vial per treatment
- 2 treatment sessions
- Total 2 vials Kybella®
Moderate submental fullness:
- 2 vials per treatment
- 2 treatment sessions
- Total 4 vials Kybella®
Severe submental fullness:
- 3 vials per treatment
- 3 treatment sessions
- Total 6 vials Kybella®
- 1-2 vials per treatment
- 1-2 treatment sessions depending on the degree of jowl fullness
- Total 1-4 vials Kybella®
Kybella® treatment sessions typically take 15-20 minutes. Lidocaine is used to numb the treatment area prior to injection. Kybella® is then placed at very specific points using an injection grid for accuracy and a very tiny needle for injection. Swelling is typically above baseline for the first week and below baseline in the second week. Bruising is less common. Most patients can easily cover their necks with a light scarf or their lower face with makeup and go about routine activities soon after treatment is complete.
Kybella® treatments are typically performed at 4 to 6-week intervals. Unlike liposuction which can leave loose skin, the skin overlying treated fat undergoes contraction as a result of the inflammatory effects of Kybella® so that fat reduction does not result in loose skin. Many patients ask how CoolSculpt® which freezes neck fat compares to Kybella®. The Coolsculpt® device is bigger and more for bulk freezing of larger areas of fat; it also fails to tighten residual loose skin.

A Master Injector
Having a master injector is key to a satisfying result from your Kybella® treatment. While there are many average injectors, only a few have the skill level and anatomic understanding to give consistent, successful results.

This unique Kybella®-RF treatment protocol has been very successful in dissolving fat, tightening mild to moderately loose skin, and defining the cervico-mental angle. Some patients also require botox to treat the vertical platysmal neck bands to optimize results. Others can benefit from injectable filler to plump the marionette lines and sagging mouth corners for enhanced results.
What are alternatives to Kybella?
Patients with more significant neck fat that extends beyond the boundaries of the submental region may be candidates for neck liposuction.
